This is our FUYU YAMA bowl

"Fuyu Yama"Which translates to ‘winter Mountain’ from Japanese.

The bowl is made in a not so often used Tsutsu Gata shape. The bowl has a long cilinder like shape (Tsutsu gata) which helps retain heat of the Matcha in the colder months of the year.

This type of bowl is sometimes refered to as ‘Fuyu chawan’, which can betranslated to winter bowls, because it is often used in the winter.

This Matcha bowl also has a candy glaze, or ‘ame-yu’ (飴釉) in Japanese. It is a glaze high in iron known for it’s many variaties and unevenness in colour and texture. It received it’s name from the overal Caramel looking colour.

We found this Matcha bowl in a small pottery shop in Seto city in Aichi Prefecture.

Nagae Masamitsu is the 4th generation of owners in the poterry shop.

The shop has been build more than 150 years ago and got it’s pottery from the brother and father of Nagae wife who recently passed away.

The new pottery in the store is made by the couple’s daughter (Sanako Kato) who also does exhibitions in Tokyo.
