We found this special Matcha bowl in a small antique store in The center of Asakusa. The owner told us that this bowl is over 50 years old and that he found this antique Matcha Bowl in an old house in Kyoto.

The style of the Bowl is called ‘Shino ware’ which is a ceramic style that originated from the Mino prefecture which is known today as the Gifu prefecture.

‘Shino ware’ is characterised by it’s thick white glaze, bright red markings and it’s texture with small holes.

‘Shino ware’ was also a favoured pottery style of Sen no Rokyu, one of the most influentual people in the Tea Ceremony culture.

The shape of the bowl is called “Han tsutsu-Gata” which translates to half cilinder shape.

We are still trying to understand what the beautiful bright orange marking on the bowl could mean. The previous owner of the bowl informed us that the marking is probably the signature of the Master of the Matcha bowl.

We named this Matcha Bowl “FUSHIMI” due to the Unique birght orange marking on the Bowl which reminder us of the beautiful Temple ‘Fushimi Inari-taisha temple in Kyoto.
